ATS Rejected My CV. Now What?

If you've never heard the term before finding out it might have rejected you, that's worth knowing straight away: an ATS, an Applicant Tracking System, is software many employers use to sort and filter applications before a person reads any of them. It's not judging your career. It's scanning for patterns, and it can miss genuinely strong candidates for reasons that have nothing to do with ability.

Why it happens even to strong applicants

ATS software commonly filters out CVs for reasons that feel arbitrary once you know them: unusual formatting, tables or columns it can't parse correctly, a job title that doesn't precisely match its expected keyword list, or a gap in dates it flags without context. A genuinely excellent candidate can be filtered out purely because their CV was built to look good to a person, not to a piece of parsing software.

The practical fixes

A few things do help on the CV side: simpler formatting (avoiding tables, columns, and graphics the software may not read correctly), mirroring some of the specific language used in the job description, and making sure dates and job titles are unambiguous. These are worth doing. They're not a full solution.

The deeper problem ATS optimisation doesn't fix

Even a perfectly ATS-friendly CV still only describes what you claim, not what you can actually do. Optimising the document further just makes you better at getting past a filter, it doesn't make the case any more convincing once a human is actually reading it, especially now that AI has made every CV look equally polished.

A different kind of evidence

Rather than only optimising a document to survive software filtering, it's worth having something else to offer entirely, evidence that doesn't depend on getting past an ATS at all. Try-a-Career and the Personal Development Report give you a realistic simulation of a role, and a plain-language report of your actual strengths, something you can reference directly in a cover letter, an application, or a conversation, that never has to pass through a filter to be seen.
