Decision-Making Skills: What They Actually Look Like at Work

Every job listing seems to ask for "strong decision-making skills," and almost nobody explains what that actually means in practice. It's worth breaking down properly, because it's rarely about being decisive in the way people assume.

It's not about deciding fast

A common misconception is that good decision-makers are simply confident and quick. In reality, the more valuable skill is usually the opposite of rushing: knowing how much information is actually needed before deciding, and recognising the point past which more research just delays an already-clear answer rather than improving it.

Real decision-making happens with incomplete information

Very few workplace decisions come with all the facts neatly available. The genuine skill is making a sound call anyway, weighing the information you do have, being honest about what you don't, and choosing a path without pretending to more certainty than actually exists. That's a fundamentally different skill from simply picking an option and sounding confident about it afterward.

Why it's hard to prove on a CV

"Strong decision-maker" is one of the easiest phrases to write and one of the hardest to actually substantiate. Nearly everyone believes this about themselves. Almost nobody can point to a specific, verifiable example that shows it clearly, especially in a CV format that rewards brevity over real detail.

How to actually demonstrate it

The clearest way to show real decision-making ability is to be put in a situation with a genuine trade-off, real stakes, incomplete information, and multiple reasonable options, and to have what you actually chose, and how you reasoned through it, reflected back honestly.

That's what a Try-a-Career scenario or a Career Challenge is built to surface. Not a claim about how decisive you are, but a specific, grounded account of how you actually approached a real decision when it mattered, the kind of evidence a CV bullet point can never provide.
