You're Not Imagining It. Hiring Bias Is Real, and It's Been Proven.

If you've ever walked out of an interview convinced it went well, then never heard back, it's worth knowing something: the reason might genuinely have nothing to do with your capability. A well-known study by the CIPD, the UK's professional body for HR, found that hiring decisions are shaped far more by unconscious bias than most employers would ever admit.

Interviewers hire people who remind them of themselves

The research found that interviewers consistently favour candidates who resemble them, in hobbies, background, even how they dress and present themselves. That's not really a judgement on whether you can do the job well. It's a judgement on how familiar you feel to one specific person, on one specific day.

Identical CVs, different outcomes

One of the starkest findings: identical CVs, same experience, same qualifications, same wording, received meaningfully different callback rates depending on whether the applicant's name was perceived as more or less traditionally English. Nothing about the actual content changed. Only the name did.

Even the room can work against you

Some of the findings are almost hard to believe, and that's exactly why they matter. Interviewers holding a warm drink beforehand were more likely to judge a candidate as warm and likeable. The time of day, how mentally tired the interviewer was, even the physical weight of the clipboard your CV was handed on, all measurably shifted how you were scored. None of that reflects anything real about your ability to do the job.

So what can you actually do with this?

Knowing this doesn't undo a rejection that's already happened, but it's worth genuinely internalising: a "no" from a traditional interview process is often a reflection of noise, timing, and unconscious bias, not a verdict on your worth or capability. That's not you being oversensitive. It's documented, peer-reviewed research from a serious professional body.

What actually helps is having something to point to that isn't filtered through one person's gut instinct on one particular afternoon, real evidence of how you think and work, evaluated on what you did, not who you happened to remind someone of. That's exactly what Try-a-Career gives you: a realistic scenario, and a plain account of your strengths grounded in what you actually did, not in whether you happened to click with a stranger for forty-five minutes.

The bias is real. It was never about you. And there are better ways to be seen.
