I Hate My Job. What Should I Do?

First, worth separating two different problems that feel identical from the inside but need different fixes: hating this specific job, and being in the wrong career entirely. They're not the same thing, and confusing them is how people end up quitting into another version of the exact same problem.

Is it the job, or the career?

A bad manager, a toxic team, an employer that's stopped investing in you, all of that can make a genuinely good-fit career feel unbearable. If you moved to a better team in the same field, would the dread actually lift? If the honest answer is yes, this is a job problem, not a career problem, and the fix is a different employer, not a different profession.

But if you try to imagine a better version of the exact same role, better manager, better team, better pay, and the thought still doesn't excite you, that's a different, more useful signal. That's worth paying attention to.

Why "just quit" is bad advice

It's tempting, in the middle of really hating a job, to want out immediately, anywhere else, anything else. That instinct is understandable and usually a mistake. Leaving without a clearer sense of what you actually want tends to just relocate the same dissatisfaction somewhere new, dressed differently.

What's actually worth doing

Before making any big decision, it's worth getting real information rather than making a change on frustration alone. If you suspect this is a career-level problem, the useful next step isn't more venting or more research, it's actually testing whether something else genuinely suits you better, in a realistic way, before you commit to it.

Try-a-Career lets you do exactly that. Pick a direction you're curious about, and it builds a short, realistic simulation of that specific role. What you do in it gives you real evidence, not a hopeful guess, about whether it's genuinely a better fit or just a different flavour of the same frustration.

You don't have to have this figured out today. But it's worth finding out before you leap somewhere you haven't actually tested.
