What Is Commercial Awareness (and Why Does Every Employer Ask About It)?

It's one of the most commonly requested skills in job listings, and one of the least clearly explained, which is exactly why so many candidates struggle to demonstrate it convincingly.

What it actually means

Commercial awareness is the ability to understand how your work connects to the wider business, its costs, its priorities, its competitive position, and to make decisions with that context in mind rather than in isolation. It's the difference between completing a task correctly and completing it in a way that actually serves what the business needs right now.

It's not the same as knowing general business news, and it's not the same as having a business degree. Plenty of highly commercially aware people have neither.

Why it's so hard to show on a CV

Commercial awareness is fundamentally about judgement in context, and judgement is very difficult to demonstrate through a written claim. "I have strong commercial awareness" on a CV tells an employer nothing, because anyone can write that sentence regardless of whether it's true.

What actually demonstrates it

The only convincing way to show commercial awareness is through a real decision, ideally one involving a genuine trade-off: limited budget, competing priorities, an outcome that affects more than just the immediate task.
